This is Nick's debut book. I've been following his progress ans wanted to read his debut book. It was well worth the wait. Fans of extreme horror will enjoy this one for sure. While it has plenty of gross scenes, when you put the context of Arliss's tough childhood, it will make you feel sorry for him. At times I hated him, but as I got toward the end of the story, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. It's a tough lesson that kids will grow up emulating what they learned as they grew up. I read it in one sitting. Well done, Nick!

I've been waiting on this book since I came across Nick in the horror community, which was only heightened after reading his story in Modern Grotesque. As much as it pained me to wait, I will have to say it was worth it. First and foremost, fantastic dedication. Top 10 dedications, for sure. Second, the story of Arliss, complete with the events of his dad, his treatment of his brother, and the entirety of the story is a well executed exploration of character. You can tell that Scarbrough knows Arliss Shine inside and out, and the passion absolutely seeps out in the writing. The plot/story progression does a great job of keeping on without overwhelming the reader with constant action. Fully-fledged thoughts and feelings are explored and ultimately makes this one hell of a memorable debut. Finally, I don't usually pay too much attention to character dialect/voice, but in such a positive way, each character's voice stood out to me vividly. The way each character spoke was distinct to them and them alone, and added so much to the overall characterization that was already so good. If you like extreme horror, read this. This is a no-miss book.
If you don't like extreme horror, start.

I’ve been following Nick’s writing journey for a while now. Especially this story in particular. When he first pitched the idea to me MONTHS ago, I was beyond thrilled to see what it would materialize into. I knew it was destined to be great, but wow, he knocked it out of the park when this debut. 👏🏼 It’s an Extreme Horror that provides all the gory, vile, depraved, and gag worthy scenes / characters you’d expect from this genre. But it also provides an amazing plot with detailed imagery and unbelievable character development right from the prologue. The writing style is smooth to read and the scenes transition flawlessly. I truly feel in the depths of my soul that this book is going to do big things and in return, Nick is going to do even bigger things. I cannot wait until everyone can get their hands on this book and finally see what a handful of us have seen the entire time. 🙌🏼

I was a beta reader for this and words cannot explain how good this book is. For the authors first book on his own he’s blown it out the water!!
We have a family of 3, a father and his 2 sons. When his father has a critical accident, Arliss, one of his sons decides he wants to follow his father’s footsteps and do some taxidermy to preserve his father.
It was a rollercoaster of emotions from pissing myself laughing at points, to gagging due to the extremely well described gore moments. This gave me “when I die” by Asher darks vibes and it was just such a smooth book to read. Excellent work Nick! Super proud of you and what monstrosity you have released 😂

4.5 🩸🐰⭐️ I was given an arc of this in exchange for an honest review , after reading Nick’s story in Modern Grotesque I was highly anticipating his first novella . And he definitely didn’t disappoint…… Arliss Shine didn’t come from the best upbringing. When his father has an unforeseen accident,Arliss finds himself alone and wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps of taxidermy. This being Nick’s debut novella, he really knocked it out of the park. This story being only 117 pages i devoured it in one sitting . It was fast paced and so disgusting at times my jaw aches from saying Eww. Highly recommend this to those who enjoy the extreme side of 📚!

This book had me in a chokehold. I've followed the author through his journey with this book, and he did not disappoint with the outcome. You will say ewwww, you will gasp, you will laugh, and at one point, you'll say awwwww! There were so many emotions going through me while reading this. There was so much pity that I felt for Arliss, but at the same time, I had so much hatred for him. Very rarely does a book put me in my feels, and this was one of them. I can't wait for more from Nick Scarbrough.

Ooo boy. This is Nick’s debut novel and I’m suprised he hadn’t done it sooner. This was a fantastic read and I can’t wait for Nick to write more. It’s gross, it’s violent but it’s actually quite sad and you end up feeling sorry for the main character, well I did.

This author's debut novella is brilliant and nasty with all the right ingredients. Nick is someone to keep your eyes on. He checks all the boxes on this must-read twisted tale.
Go read it!

Surprisingly well done for this genre. The author created a cast of characters you get interested in against a setting that suits them and the story perfectly. He doesn't just string together gore for shock's sake but the blood is there. The writing could be tightened up because it was a tad laborious at times. But it's one of the better books I've read in a while from that genre.
