You may already know that today is World Mental Health Day.I want to mention just a few words to thank all the incredible folks working in mental health, whoâthankfullyâare holding us together⌠one session at a time. As humans, surely this is where we thrive? Compassion, empathy, and emotional support are practically our default setting⌠Iâd like to think so. Some of you may not know (as it doesn't really help with writing CVs!) that I studied and practiced Buddhism intensely for many years, which has definitely shaped who I am today. One thing I remember that always sticks with me, is the saying: âIf you see the Buddha on the road, kill himâ.Sounds extreme, right? But from a mental health perspective, it means to stop looking for external saviours. Thereâs no âperfectâ guru or quick fixâtrue growth comes from within, predominantly. Anyhoo⌠just a little nod to all you mental health warriors, but do remember, no one can do the âinnerâ work for us.Photo: Unsplash.

Meet Leanne Parkes, an EXTREMELY adaptable commissioned officer (currently MTO) and former Regimental Sergeant Major with a rich background in military leadership and logistics management. She is soon to leave the military, and is open to a variety of civilian roles, including people/leadership development, operations management, and logistics. Later on today she will be armed with a 'speculative' CV, detailing her unique background. She has a lot of experience overseeing both military and civilian teams, with an impressive background in risk management, operational planning, and team development as you'd expect given her background. Her heart is as big as a hotel key fob, and her intellect is ten times that size.Based in Yorkshire, Leanne is HUGELY passionate about people development, believing that well-being is at the heart of everything she does. Uniquely open-minded regarding job opportunities, she is VERY KEEN AND MOTIVATED to explore a wide range of roles. Her LinkedIn profile will be complete shortly (please don't upsell her LinkedIn help at this moment), but if youâre looking for a dedicated, bright ex-mil professional who prioritises peopleâs well-being and can bring SIGNIFICANT value to your team, do contact her for a chat!I guarantee Leanne will bring great value to any organisation. The real joy for me? Itâs when someone whoâs faced a pile of rejections finally lands an interview â but itâs not just about the CV. In fact, If you think the CV is your main selling point, youâve got it wrongâyou are. Your job search strategy (minus the CV, initially) is your key sell. With every client, I donât just write CVs â that's the easy part for me. I walk them through the whole job search processâhow to tweak the CV for different roles, how to use it; who to reach out to, and what to say. Itâs a lot more than slapping some buzzwords on a piece of paper.Speaking of buzzwords, if you ever part with your money and all you get is a document packed with corporate nonsense in your inbox, run. Fast. No one wants a âResults-driven project manager with experience leading teams and delivering projects on time and within scope. Seasoned in fostering team collaboration and enhancing project outcomes⌠âđŤđŤ^^But unfortunately, I read these words often verbatim, daily, when reviewing CVs.

So... we know LinkedIn is the Wild West of career coaching scams. You canât even scroll past a single post without being bombarded by someone offering the âultimate secret formulaâ for landing your dream job. Iâm talking about the 100-step processes that makes rocket science look like assembling an IKEA chair.Step 1: Find the career coach with the most stock photos of people looking vaguely professional (bonus points if theyâre all giving TED Talks).Step 2: Pay them your life savings for their super-exclusive 3-hour consultation, where theyâll reveal such groundbreaking secrets as⌠updating your profile picture.Step 3: Receive a template CV that looks like it was designed by someone who just learned WordArt in 2003.And what about these LinkedIn profile âoptimisers.â Theyâll throw in phrases such as âhighly adaptable ninjaâ or âvisionary thought leaderâ because these are the magic words recruiters are inputting all day. If youâre not using "thought leader" at least 15 times in your profile, are you even employable? Step 4: Theyâll tell you to add random phrases like âglobal synergy influencerâ and âoptimisation wizard,â No one ever got a job without some good olâ synergy influencing.Step 5: Watch in awe as absolutely nothing happens, except maybe now youâre getting messages from other "coaches" trying to sell you their advanced version of the same nonsense you just bought. You start with one "coach," and before you know it, youâre knee-deep in offers to join their exclusive mastermind group (aka a Zoom call where everyone just agrees with each other). And donât even get me started on the testimonials. âThanks to [Insert Coach Name Here], I went from living in my Uncle's basement to CEO of a tech startup in 30 days!â Okay, Karen, I'm sure you did. This random coach just totally changed your life by moving your skills section higher up on your LinkedIn profile. đ.Step 6: Post vague motivational quotes daily.Step 7: Wait for recruiters to fall at your feet (they wonât).Step 8: Realise the only people commenting on your posts are bots and other career coaches fishing for their next victim. Here's a free tip from meâskip the 100-step process, avoid paying someone to "enhance" your CV with Clipart, and just focus on good old networking which is free on LinkedIn, and applying for jobs that match your skills. If you ever feel the urge to pay ÂŁ1,000 for someone to copy-paste "results-driven guru" into your profile, at least make sure you get a free eBook out of it. đ Image: Creative Commons

Being Good at Your Job Isnât Enough â No One Likes Working with a ToolWeâve all been there. Youâre sitting across from someone, theyâre smart, technically sharp, and good at what they do. But after about 90 seconds, youâre silently praying for the nearest exit. Why? Because no matter how brilliant someone is, if theyâre as likeable as a wet sock, no one wants to work with them.Itâs the unspoken truth of the workplace: being technically good at your job is only half the battle. You can be the Michelangelo of spreadsheets or the Shakespeare of PowerPoint, but if your personality screams âtediousâ or âarrogant,â it wonât matter. The team doesnât want you. The boss doesnât want you, not even the printer wants to connect with you.The Leadership TrapLeadership is where this becomes painfully obvious. We all know that one person who was promoted because they were good at their previous role. Great! But then they start leading, suddenly itâs like taking orders from a Colonel Robot whoâs just learned to shout orders.Technically sound? Yup. Capable of emotionally connecting with anyone on their team? Absolutely not. People would rather attend an eight-hour meeting about printer errors than have a five-minute chat with them. And in the corporate world, thatâs saying something. The âGlad I Donât Work with Youâ EffectWeâve all met people that trigger this reaction. They open their mouth, and itâs as if theyâve sucked all the fun out of the room and replaced it with a PowerPoint slide on compliance protocols. They may be brilliant, but after ten minutes, you start thinking, âHow fast can I fake a coughing fit and run away?âHiring managers have the same reaction. Yes, they want someone whoâs great at the job, but more than that, they want someone who wonât cause half the team to resign after a week. In interviews, youâre not just being assessed for your skillsâyouâre being evaluated for whether people can imagine sitting next to you for hours and not considering faking their own death just to get out of the office.Likeability Isnât OptionalLikeability ispartof being good at your job. You could be a genius at coding or logistics, but if you canât exchange a basic pleasantry without making people question their life choices, itâs game over. People need to feel comfortable working with you. Itâs not just about what you know, but whether people want to knowyou.Character, charm, and basic human decency have become workplace superpowers. Why? 'Cos in a world full of highly competent people, the ones who stand out are those you donât secretly hope will catch a cold the next time theyâre scheduled to work from the office.Final ThoughtsWhatâs the moral here? By all means, sharpen your technical skills. But remember, if people canât stand being in a room with you, it wonât matter how many qualifications youâve got. Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do is just be someone other people cantoleratefor eight hours straight.
