Your favorite local drugstore company is really scaling back.
In late June, Rite Aid revealed 27 more locations that would be closing this year, per Business Insider. As many shoppers know, the company, well-known as a one-stop shop for snacks, toiletries and filling prescriptions, announced store closures as part of its filing of voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy petitions in October of 2023.
“As part of this process, we are going to be closing certain of our underperforming stores,” CEO Jeffrey S. Stein said in a letter to customers in October. “If your local store is one of those that is affected, we will make every effort to ensure you have access to health services, whether at another Rite Aid or other nearby pharmacy.”
Many locations shuttered in January and February, and the addition of June's list brings the total number of closures this year to 74, however more are reportedly on the way. According to NBC, more than 500 stores have closed since 2023.
“Rite Aid regularly assesses its retail footprint to ensure we are operating efficiently while meeting the needs of our customers, communities, associates and overall business,” the retailer said in a statement to Good Housekeeping via email. “In connection with the court-supervised bankruptcy process, we notified the Court of certain underperforming stores we are closing to further reduce rent expense and strengthen our overall financial performance.”
Currently, the Rite Aid website states that there are a total of 1,592 stores across 16 states. “We expect to maintain a robust footprint in our markets and look forward to continuing to serve our customers to help them meet their health and wellness needs,” the company told us.
