Harbor College is hiring a Full-Time, Tenure-Track, C-Basis (10 Month) Theater Arts Instructor commencing with the Fall 2024 academic year. We are looking for candidates who have the desire and ability to create a welcoming classroom culture that positively engages and impacts our diverse student population.

  • The successful candidate must be able to teach all acting and directing classes. Course assignments will include late afternoon and evenings.
  • The candidate will be expected to perform the duties of an artistic director for this program.
  • The candidate will teach courses consistent with the division's standards and approved curriculum criteria.
  • The candidate will fulfill professional responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, the following: update and review division course outlines, keep accurate student records, grading, post and maintain office hours, participate in the shared governance process, write and review curriculum, and participate in division meetings and college activities.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.
  • The candidate will assume other responsibilities as assigned by the department chairperson.
  • Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
    Master's degree or Masters of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance; OR Bachelor's degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance; AND Master's degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities OR the equivalent.
    And a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the community college students, faculty and staff.
    A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense prior to employment.
    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.
  • Two years of experience teaching Theater Arts.
  • Experience producing and directing theatrical productions, including scheduling and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of technical aspects of theatrical productions.
  • Demonstrated awareness and experience working with historically underrepresented students and non-traditional students.
  • Knowledge of diverse student learning styles, current theories and methods of teaching Theater courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student learning outcomes at the college level and commitment to the institution's goals and mission.
  • Currency in the academic field and an ability to provide leadership for the program.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the integration of critical thinking skills and interdisciplinary approaches into the classroom and curriculum.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing, measuring and interpreting assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching at the college level.
  • The ability to teach one or more of the following classes: Film Appreciation and/or Film History.
  • Working knowledge of costuming, makeup and theater management.
  • Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
    The current starting range is from $72,990 to $135,620 for the ten (10) month academic year and is based on educational preparation and professional experience. The doctoral differential is $4610 per academic year. An exceptional benefits package which includes medical, vision, dental and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
